Six seven! Why kids love it, teachers ban it, and parents don’t get it

If you’ve heard “six seven!” shouted in the bath, on the soccer field, or mid-gaming session — welcome to the club. Parents everywhere are trying to decode it, while kids are crying with laughter.

Like most viral TikTok phrases, it started with music. A Philadelphia rapper named Skrilla dropped a track called Doot Doot — yes, seriously — and in it, he repeats “six seven” in a way that sticks in your head like bubblegum to your kid’s favourite pair of Nikes. Add some clever TikTok editing and a few clips of basketball star LaMelo Ball, who just happens to be 6 foot 7, and boom: a meme was born.

A video (apparently) captures the moment this phrase was coined:

Here’s the twist — it doesn’t mean anything. There’s no secret code, no hidden message, no rebellion. It’s just wonderfully silly. Kids love shouting it, posting about it, and laughing at how nonsensical it all is. Whether it’s a joke about getting 67% on a test or simply saying it for no reason, “six seven” has become the ultimate inside joke.

And that’s exactly what makes it powerful. As Klikd co-founder Pam Tudin explains, it’s not a sinister trend or something to worry about — it’s about belonging.

“In that silly six seven moment, a child who might never laugh with the ‘cool kid’ suddenly does. They feel like they belong to something.”

While teachers may roll their eyes — one even admitted, “I banned it. I’m done hearing it!” — it’s doing something quietly beautiful: helping kids connect. Siblings laugh at it together, classmates find common ground, and whole friend groups are united by a shared joke that adults don’t quite get.

So no, parents don’t need to panic. The only “risk” is that your child might yell it at dinner and laugh until milk comes out their nose. Instead of overthinking it, join in. Ask them to show you a six seven TikTok — they’ll love that you’re curious.

The six seven craze captures everything about Gen Z and Gen Alpha: creativity, community, and a joyful confusion of adults. It’ll fade soon enough, but the connection it creates will last. As Pam puts it:

“Create your own family inside joke — something that makes you laugh together.”

Because belonging starts with laughter — even when it makes absolutely no sense.
