Not just surviving — thriving! Uncle Jim celebrates 105 years
This morning, a war hero and one of Johannesburg’s most cherished citizens is celebrating an incredible milestone — 105 years of life, love, and laughter.
Ernest James Martin, affectionately known as “Uncle Jim”, is marking his birthday surrounded by family, friends, and the devoted staff at his retirement home. It’s not every day you meet someone with more than a century of stories to share — and Uncle Jim has more than earned his status as a living legend.
Born on 26 May 1920, Uncle Jim’s life has spanned eras and continents. A World War II veteran, he served as a tank recovery specialist — a job that took resilience, bravery, and smarts. After the war, he qualified as an engineer and built a life filled with meaning, humour, and heart.

His love story is the stuff of classic movies. He met Esme, the love of his life, by sheer chance. A friend who had malaria asked Jim to go on a date in his place — and that date turned into a lifelong romance. They were married in Cairo, and in true wartime spirit, Esme walked down the aisle in a dress made from a U.S. army parachute. “She wore a dress made from a Yankee parachute,” Jim recalls proudly.
Surviving the war
As a war hero, Uncle Jim remembers the terrifying realities of the war. During the London Blitz, his family home narrowly avoided destruction when a bomb fell nearby. “My mom and dad slept in the lounge and my brother and I slept in the living room. A bomb dropped… a piece came down the chimney and covered everything in soot,” he says. “We were lucky to survive.” It’s a moment that reminds us just how much history lives within him.
Now at 105, his mind is still razor-sharp and his charm? Undeniable.
His 77-year-old son Ray, a retired doctor, says every day with his dad is a blessing. “He’s the most incredible human being — never angry or depressed. Always happy. And he confesses to always being happy. There’s a hell of a lot we can all learn from this war hero.”
And clearly, Uncle Jim’s not slowing down any time soon. “He’s got a girlfriend,” Ray smiles. “Her name’s Betty, and when I leave the room, she comes in and gives him kisses. It’s just so wonderful to see.”
A war hero’s secret to a joyful life
The care team at his retirement home describe him as independent, full of life, and a favourite among the residents. “He’s always so fun,” one caregiver said. “He wants to do things himself, he likes to be around people — especially the ladies. Looking after Uncle Jim is a joy.”
So what’s his secret to a long and joyful life? Uncle Jim doesn’t hesitate: “That’s easy – sex every day and a bottle of whiskey,” he grins with a wink.
