“Absolute humdinger”: Simon Hill’s secret golf commentator life exposed
Breakfast radio listeners know Simon Hill for his quick wit, golf obsession, and willingness to chirp just about anyone in studio.
What they may not have known is that, away from HOT 102.7 Breakfast, Simon apparently transforms into a polished golf commentator.
And not just any golf commentator — the kind who casually drops phrases like “absolute humdinger” while sounding perfectly at home on SuperSport’s Golf Channel.
The discovery became one of the funniest moments on the show this morning after Parky revealed he had managed to get hold of clips from Simon’s appearance on the final day of the Kit Kat Cash and Carry Pro-Am on the Sunshine Tour.
With commentary veteran Derek Alberts alongside him, Simon sounded calm, composed, knowledgeable… and very, very serious.
Far too serious for the Breakfast team’s liking.
Listen to the full on-air moment below as the team reacts to Simon’s unexpected second career in golf commentary.
As soon as the first clip played, Simon attempted to flee the studio entirely while Bunny and Parky replayed some of the standout moments for listeners.
From discussing the pressure of shooting a 72 after opening rounds of 63 and 64, to analysing the play of Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Simon slipped seamlessly into full golf-broadcast mode.
There were thoughtful insights, smooth transitions, references to Gary Player wisdom, and even the occasional self-deprecating joke about his own golf game.
But it was the contrast between “Golf Simon” and “Breakfast Simon” that had the studio in stitches.
Simon defended himself by explaining that golf commentary is a completely different environment — five hours of focused conversation rather than the chaotic family dynamic of breakfast radio.
Still, the team wasn’t letting him off that easily.
And if you’ve ever wondered what Simon Hill sounds like when he swaps breakfast banter for professional golf analysis, this audio delivers plenty of surprises… including one very enthusiastic use of the word “humdinger.”
