Number one on the Classic Countdown… but Rick Astley didn’t want it?
When “Never Gonna Give You Up” claimed the number one spot on this past weekend’s Classic Countdown, it was a reminder of just how massive that 1987 debut really was. Produced by hitmakers Stock Aitken Waterman, the track topped charts in 25 countries and turned a 21-year-old Rick Astley into a global star almost overnight.
But behind the trench coat, finger clicks and unmistakable baritone, Astley has admitted he didn’t always feel like the superstar the world saw.
“The songs are bigger than you are. The videos are way bigger than you are. You’re like, I’m not the dude.”
Listen to what Rick Astley had to say – as featured on the Classic Countdown – below…
Watching himself in the now-iconic video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” was a surreal experience. It was his first-ever music video, and the polished pop image felt strangely unfamiliar.
“I looked at myself in the videos… especially ‘Never Gonna Give You Up,’ the first one. I’d never made a video before, and I’m looking at it going, I’m not sure who that guy is,” he said. “But I’ll just pretend to be him for a while.”
The whirlwind of fame soon became overwhelming. The touring, constant promotion and expectations of late-’80s pop stardom left him questioning his authenticity.
“The relentless day-to-day nonsense of it made me feel a bit like a fraud, if I’m honest.”
At the height of his success, Astley chose to step away from the spotlight — prioritising family life over fame. Decades later, the song has enjoyed a second life through internet culture, introducing him to a new generation.
This weekend’s Classic Countdown proved that “Never Gonna Give You Up” isn’t just a nostalgic hit — it’s a story of pressure, identity and ultimately, reclaiming your own narrative.
