We’ve all had that moment of panic after getting out of a car – the pocket pat, the bag search, and the sudden realisation: “I’ve left something behind.”

But while most of us are worried about a missing cellphone or a forgotten set of keys, some Uber passengers have managed to leave behind items that are a little harder to explain.

Uber has released its 10th annual Lost & Found Index, giving us a glimpse into the everyday essentials – and the downright bizarre belongings – that have been discovered after trips.

Unsurprisingly, phones remain the most commonly forgotten item, followed by wallets, luggage, keys, headphones, clothing, passports, glasses, jewellery and laptops.

But it’s the “how did you forget THAT?” category that has everyone talking.

Among the strangest items reported this year were dentures, breast milk, human hair, an ankle monitor, a live fish, a mannequin, a mini fridge, a wizard wand – and even a 75-gallon fish tank.

Yes, someone apparently got out of an Uber and forgot an entire fish tank.

The index has become an unexpected time capsule of what’s trending around the world. Over the years, forgotten items have reflected what people were carrying at the time – from face masks during the pandemic era to popular collectables and gadgets.

Uber says certain patterns also emerge when it comes to forgetfulness, with weekends and late nights often proving risky for belongings.

While the unusual finds might make us laugh, the annual list is also a reminder to do the classic check before closing the door: phone, wallet, keys… and perhaps your fish.

Because somewhere out there, an Uber driver has probably had to ask the question: “Excuse me, did you leave your mannequin in my car?”
