As tributes continue to pour in for beloved broadcaster and HOT 102.7FM presenter Darren Scott, his former school, De La Salle Holy Cross College, paid their respects in a moving and symbolic way at this year’s Highland Championship Gathering.

With the sun casting long shadows across the field, the school community came together to remember a Lasallian who left an indelible mark on both the airwaves and the hearts of those who knew him.

At the 2025 Highland Gathering, held on the fields of De La Salle Holy Cross College, Principal Neil Berndsen addressed the crowd ahead of the traditional massed band performance — but this year, with special meaning.

“We’d like to take a moment to pause and be still,” he began, “as we remember and pay tribute to a former pupil of De La Salle College who passed away this week — Mr Darren Scott.”

With visible emotion, Berndsen reflected on Darren’s journey from schoolboy to national broadcasting icon, noting that “his character and charisma permeated through airwaves and television across our beloved country and into the hearts of so many.”

Yet, beyond the fame, he reminded the crowd of Darren’s Lasallian roots — of a young man who once walked those same corridors, played on those same fields, and who, when he returned years later to speak to students, did so “not as a celebrity, but as an old boy who cared deeply about community.”

The principal recalled Darren’s trademark humour and honesty, and the simple but powerful advice he once gave learners: “Do your best to make the most out of the opportunities and experiences that come your way. And don’t forget to live life to the fullest.”

With that spirit in mind, the massed pipe bands gathered on the field to perform “Amazing Grace” — a stirring moment of musical tribute, played in Darren’s honour.
