Digital Dome Replacing the Planetarium in Johannesburg

The beloved “Johannesburg Planetarium” is about to embark on an exhilarating new chapter as it relaunches as the “Wits Anglo American Digital Dome”. Opening to the public in February 2025, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to transform how we experience science and education in South Africa.

Imagine stepping into a space where learning comes alive—where you can glide through the cosmos or join a herd of wildebeest on their epic migration in realistic 360° immersive shows. The Digital Dome is designed to captivate visitors of all ages, making science and technology accessible and engaging for everyone.

Backed by a significant R90 million investment from Anglo American and Wits University, this project brings together the best of technology and education. Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, the Vice-Chancellor of Wits University, reflects on his own journey, recalling how the original Planetarium inspired him to pursue a career in nuclear physics.
