Gauteng families are in for a treat as Bluey’s Big Play The Stage Show brings the beloved animated Blue Heeler family to life at Montecasino’s Teatro from 9 to 20 July 2025. But this heartwarming theatre experience comes with an even bigger mission — to help animals in need get through the icy Highveld winter.
As the hit show rolls into town following its Cape Town debut, audiences are encouraged to bring along donations of pet food, blankets, toys, and second-hand books in support of Woodrock Animal Rescue. Collection bins will be available in the Teatro foyer throughout the show’s run.
“We need double the amount of blankets in winter,” says Stella Meldau, co-founder of Woodrock Animal Rescue. “Nothing dries, and dogs from disadvantaged communities don’t know what blankets are – they often tear them, and we run short very quickly.”
Woodrock has been a sanctuary for animals since 1992, supporting up to 500 animals at a time through rescue, outreach, and community wellness initiatives. Their Tuesday and Thursday outreach visits expose them to heartbreaking conditions.
“We go into communities where dogs have nothing to lie on. It’s heart-wrenching,” says Meldau. “We hate asking for donations, but we have to – and we’re incredibly grateful to be the chosen charity for Bluey’s Big Play.”
Donations don’t have to be big or brand new. Whether it’s a tin of cat food, a second-hand pet blanket, or a packet of dog biscuits, every item helps. Even second-hand books will be gratefully received — they’ll be resold to raise funds for the animals under Woodrock’s care.
The show itself promises joy and laughter as Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad take audiences through a day full of games, music, and fun. Created by Joe Brumm and featuring music by Joff Bush, it’s a must-see for fans of the Emmy® Award-winning series. VIP meet-and-greet options are also available.
Tickets are on sale now at showtime.co.za and ticketmaster.co.za. Bring the kids, enjoy the show — and make a difference for South Africa’s most vulnerable animals.
