How Hot Cares helped a future Reserve Bank Governor

When Unathi Tong’s mother’s former employer reached out to Hot Cares, it was simply to request a school blazer—so Unathi could proudly wear her achievement scrolls at Princess High School. But what followed was a life-changing journey that none of us could have predicted.

Unathi’s original story was one that captured all our hearts. From that single request, Hot Cares stepped in with full support for her schooling—covering fees, uniforms, textbooks, stationery, school outings, and eventually, a laptop to ensure she kept up with online learning.

Unathi rose to the challenge, becoming Head Girl and completing high school with an academic average close to 80%. Even through tough times, she never complained—asking only for extra maths lessons and help with her university entrance exams.

Her dream? To study a BCom in Economics and one day become Governor of the Reserve Bank. When university called, Hot Cares answered again—awarding her a full bursary to help make that dream a reality.

“Hot Cares walked this journey with me ever since I was just a girl in high school,” says Unathi. “It’s more than support—it’s family.”

That support has changed Unathi’s life in ways that go beyond the classroom. Today, she approaches her studies with confidence, knowing she has people rooting for her. But it’s not just the academic success that stands out—it’s the emotional transformation.

“I always thought I had to do everything on my own. Now I know I don’t. They’re one call away.”

From Carmen to Andrea, everyone at Hot Cares has become part of Unathi’s village. When she faced personal challenges, they were the first people she called—even in the middle of the night.

And now, Unathi is giving back. She’s volunteered her time at Hot Cares events, including our Mandela Day project, helping to organise and contribute in meaningful ways.

“I might not be able to give financially yet, but I give my time. It’s the least I can do.”

Her journey—from a single blazer to a BCom degree—is a powerful reminder of how your Teddython donations make a lasting impact.

Education unlocked

Unathi’s journey isn’t the only one that reminds us of the power of education and the life-changing impact of your generosity. Another young star rising through the ranks is Thoriso Mthembu, the son of Phindile Mthembu, who runs the Tholakele Centre of Hope for orphaned and vulnerable children in Ekurhuleni.

Despite the immense challenges Phindile faces—including caring for 43 children on a drastically reduced government budget—she never stopped believing in her own son’s potential. Thoriso, a top-achieving student and deputy head boy, dreamt of attending Christian Brothers’ College, but the cost—even with a partial scholarship—was out of reach.

That’s where Hot Cares stepped in. Partnering with Christian Brothers’ College, we helped secure Thoriso a full bursary covering his tuition from grade 8 through to matric. But we didn’t stop there—we also ensured he had everything he needed to thrive: a school uniform, sports gear, stationery, and a laptop equipped with the learning software he needs to excel.

Now fully equipped and motivated, Thoriso is flourishing at CBC—maintaining an 80% academic average and excelling in public speaking, poetry, sport, and leadership. His heartfelt thanks to Hot Cares is a reminder of why we do this: “All I want to say is thank you. Hot Cares gave me everything I need to succeed.”

Graduation against all odds

Another powerful example of perseverance meets purpose is the story of Phophi Mudau, a final-year BCom Management Sciences student at Stellenbosch University who faced the devastating news that she would be unable to graduate due to outstanding fees. Determined not to give up, Phophi launched a small sweet-packet business, selling R60 mixed sweets across campus and online in a bid to cover the R47,000 shortfall. Her resilience, optimism, and entrepreneurial spirit caught the attention of Hot Cares—and we stepped in to help her cross the finish line.

We didn’t just settle her fees—we flew her mother and sister from Limpopo to Stellenbosch so they could witness her graduation in person. We also gifted her a clothing voucher to help her step confidently into the world of work. Today, Phophi is employed at Audi Claremont, training to be a finance and insurance manager. “Hot 102.7FM solved my fees problem and so much more,” she says. “I’m beyond grateful.” Her story is proof that when determination meets compassion, doors open—and dreams are no longer out of reach.

Because when it comes to changing lives, education truly matters most.
