Most of us take it for granted — sending a leave request, checking a payslip, or getting updates from the boss with just a few clicks. But for the majority of South Africans, it’s not that easy.
Speaking on HOT Business with Jeremy Maggs, powered by Standard Bank, Simon Ellis from Jem HR introduced us to a group we don’t often think about: the desk-less workforce.
That’s the 75% of South Africans who don’t work behind a desk or computer — people like cleaners, factory workers, petrol attendants, retail staff, and security guards. They’re the heartbeat of our economy, yet most of the systems in place to support them were never built with them in mind.
So, how do you help people who don’t have easy access to email or company systems?
You use something they already have — WhatsApp.
Simon and his team have come up with a simple solution: let people apply for leave, check their payslips, or get shift updates via WhatsApp. No extra apps. No complicated passwords. Just a few taps on a phone.
And it’s working. Companies across the country are using this approach to make life easier for their teams — and employees love it. It’s fast, secure, and it helps everyone feel more connected.
There’s even more to it — like how companies are now offering extra support, including financial tips and savings options, straight through WhatsApp.
