Carnes knew the song needed a completely different feel from earlier versions, so she and her band set about reinventing it from the ground up. At the time, she had what she described as an incredibly tight live band — so tight, in fact, that they approached recording almost like preparing for a concert.

Rather than building the song piece by piece, the band rehearsed it live for days, shaping the arrangement until it felt just right.

“We worked on Bette Davis Eyes about three days…”

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Keyboard player Bill Cuomo discovered what Carnes called the “magic sound” — that instantly recognisable synth hook that gives the track its cool, haunting mood. With that final piece in place, they headed into the studio the very next day.

What listeners eventually heard on radio stations around the world was astonishingly spontaneous.

The version that became the hit was captured on just the second take.

Even more surprising? The recording that became the official release was not even the final polished version — it was a rough mix.
