Why Mariah Carey says success means nothing without the fans
For over three decades, Mariah Carey has reigned as one of the most influential and celebrated voices in music history — a songwriter, producer, and vocalist whose career has defined the sound of modern pop and R&B. Yet despite the countless awards, chart-topping hits, and global fame, Carey says she still strives to remain true to her roots and the reason she started singing in the first place.
“I just really try to stay grounded and remember where I came from and why I got into this business in the first place,” she says. “Which is because I love music and I love singing.”
From her self-titled debut in 1990, which introduced the world to her jaw-dropping five-octave range, to timeless hits like Vision of Love, Hero, and We Belong Together, Carey’s career has been a masterclass in reinvention. Her influence spans generations — blending pop and soul, pioneering the use of hip-hop collaborations in mainstream pop, and inspiring countless artists who came after her.
Over the years, Mariah Carey has collected an extraordinary list of accolades: multiple Grammy Awards, 19 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, and record-breaking sales that have earned her the title of the best-selling female artist of all time. But while she acknowledges the power of such recognition, Carey believes awards only tell part of the story.
“The American Music Awards are voted on basically by the public, and the Grammys are voted by the industry,” she explains. “It’s an incredible feeling to have the industry and all these incredible musicians tell you, ‘We love what you’re doing, we respect what you’re doing.’ That’s the highest compliment. But it’s also amazing to feel that love from the public and from the fans.”

It’s this balance — between critical acclaim and fan devotion — that has shaped Carey’s career. Her authenticity, vulnerability, and connection to her audience continue to make her one of the most beloved performers in the world.
Even now, with her legacy firmly cemented, Carey approaches her music with gratitude and humility. “I’ve been really, really fortunate to be able to have so much success so early on in life,” she reflects. “So I’m just really thankful.”
After all these years, the “Songbird Supreme” remains exactly what she set out to be — a true artist, guided by her love of music and the people who believe in her.
