Did you know turtles can breathe through their butts? Bunny’s top 10 is full of surprises

Top 10 Tuesdays on HOT 1027 Breakfast took a wonderfully wild turn this morning as Bunny dove into the animal kingdom to reveal fascinating (and sometimes downright bizarre) facts about creatures from around the world.

Inspired by a shark story from the day before, Bunny decided to take listeners on a journey through 10 strange and surprising animal traits – and it’s fair to say, things got weird fast!

At number 10, we learned that octopuses have three hearts, two of which pump blood to their gills, while the third handles circulation for the rest of the body – though it stops beating when they swim!

Then there was number 9, a listener favourite: wombats poop in cubes. Yep, the square shape helps stop their droppings from rolling away, which is handy for marking territory. “I can do that,” Simon quipped. “You cannot,” came the swift reply.

We also found out that cows have best friends, kangaroos can’t walk backwards, and elephants communicate through their feet using vibrations that travel for miles.

But it didn’t stop there. The team was floored to discover that turtles can breathe through their butts (specifically, through their cloaca), and platypuses are venomous – who knew?

Rounding out the list was the incredible lyrebird, capable of mimicking everything from camera shutters to chainsaws.

And that’s not even the full list.
