Gearing up for historic Annapurna summit attempt

No South African has ever stood atop Annapurna, one of the world’s most formidable 8,000-meter peaks. That may soon change as Warren Eva and John Black embark on a mission that is not only historic—but deeply personal. The seasoned climbers are taking on one of the deadliest mountains on Earth to raise funds for children’s education and nutrition initiatives, using their extreme adventure to make a lasting impact beyond the summit.

The challenge of Annapurna

Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world, is notorious for its high fatality rate, brutal conditions, and relentless avalanche danger. Warren and John have climbed together for nearly three decades, conquering some of the world’s toughest peaks, including K2 in 2022, where they proudly planted the South African flag. This time, they’re attempting Annapurna without supplemental oxygen, adding another layer of difficulty to an already perilous climb.

“This mountain doesn’t give second chances,” Warren explained. “Between Camp 1 and Camp 3, we’re moving through avalanche zones where rescue is impossible. Every step has to be calculated, every move precise.”

In temperatures plunging to -50°C and winds strong enough to strip exposed skin, frostbite is an ever-present danger. Without supplemental oxygen, their bodies will struggle to generate heat, making proper gear, mental fortitude, and teamwork essential.

What it takes to survive

Packing for an expedition like this is a science and a survival strategy. Every item must serve a critical purpose, from keeping warm to providing energy. Among their essential gear are:

  • High-altitude boots with inner liners that never leave their feet above base camp to prevent freezing.

  • Down suits, thermal layers, and gloves designed for extreme temperatures.

  • Ice axes, crampons, and ropes for navigating steep, icy terrain.

  • Minus 40-degree sleeping bags for the frigid nights at high altitude.

  • Rehydrated meals and energy-dense snacks, including a stockpile of Snickers bars, which have become Warren’s go-to fuel source at altitude.

  • Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and medical supplies, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and painkillers, to combat illness in the harsh environment.

With weight restrictions in mind, every item has been carefully chosen to maximize survival and efficiency over the course of their seven-week journey.

Climbing for a cause

While their goal is to make history, their mission runs deeper than personal achievement. Warren and John have partnered with Food4Hope, dedicated to supporting vulnerable children through education and nutrition. By taking on one of the greatest physical and mental tests in mountaineering, they hope to raise awareness and funds to create real change.

“We’re privileged to be able to climb,” Warren said. “And if we can use this expedition to help those in need, then every hardship, every risk, is worth it.”

The bond that fuels the climb

Years of climbing together have forged an unspoken trust between Warren and John—something crucial when your life depends on your partner.

“We move at the same pace, we eat the same snacks, and we know exactly what the other is thinking in high-pressure situations,” Warren shared. “That understanding can mean the difference between success and failure.”

And speaking of snacks—packing for an expedition like this isn’t just about ropes, oxygen meters, and crampons. Alongside their extreme gear, South African favorites like rusks, coffee, and a mountain of Snickers bars are coming along for the journey, offering a small but vital connection to home.
