“It’s still sinking in” – Pieter Benade on HOT 1027 after historic win

After a 34-year absence from the world stage, the Zimbabwe National Rugby Team has qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup — and the moment is only just beginning to sink in for head coach Pieter Benade.

Speaking to HOT 1027 Breakfast live from Harare, Benade described the team’s qualification as “surreal” and said they’re determined to make Zimbabwe proud as they prepare to take on rugby’s elite. “We’re a resilient bunch,” he said. “And the guys certainly showed a lot of that on the field.”

Ranked 24th in the world, Zimbabwe has defied expectations and earned its place alongside global giants like South Africa — and according to Benade, the team’s growth is thanks to belief, grassroots development, and collective support from sponsors like Nedbank, the government, and the fans.

Pulling together a team of local amateurs and international professionals, Zimbabwe’s strategy blends homegrown talent with players active in France, South Africa, and the URC. “No one in Zimbabwe is paid to play rugby,” said Benade, “but the belief and commitment are there.”

Looking ahead, Zimbabwe could take part in a new Tier 2 Nations Cup, providing much-needed test match experience ahead of Australia 2027. But Benade says their focus remains broader than just their own squad. “We’re also trying to help our region — Zambia, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda — and represent the rest of Africa with pride.”

In a surprise twist, legendary commentator Hugh Bladen phoned in mid-interview to toast the team’s achievement. “Absolutely brilliant work” he chuckled. “We’re supporting your boys all the way!”
