Swedish stink bomb: HOT 1027 Breakfast opens a can of chaos

The HOT 1027 Breakfast team made smelly history when they decided to tackle surströmming – a notorious Swedish delicacy often dubbed the world’s stinkiest food. The challenge, streamed live from the station’s balcony, turned into a chaotic mix of laughter, nerves, and heaving stomachs.

It all began when a friend of the show returned from Sweden with a swollen tin of surströmming – fermented Baltic herring that’s been banned on some airlines because of its overpowering odor. Social media is filled with videos of people gagging as they open a can, and the team knew they had to put their courage to the test.

Armed with cutlery, napkins, air freshener, and a few “just-in-case” buckets, Parky, Bunny, and Simon braced themselves. As the opener pierced the tin, the fish erupted in a frothy, bubbling spray – a sight (and smell) none of them were prepared for. “It’s climbing out of the can!” one presenter exclaimed, as the rest scrambled to keep their distance. Eyes watered, stomachs lurched, and laughter mixed with genuine panic as the balcony became a battlefield against the stench.

Simon, reluctantly chosen as the first to attempt a taste, hovered nervously with the bucket nearby. The smell was described as somewhere between rotten eggs, sewage, and old socks left in the sun. Even seasoned radio pranksters were stunned by its ferocity.

While it’s a delicacy in Sweden, traditionally eaten with potatoes, onions, and flatbread, the HOT 1027 crew proved why surströmming remains one of the most feared food challenges on the planet. And for listeners, it was pure radio gold – messy, hilarious, and unforgettable.

HOT 1027 once again showed they’re willing to go the extra mile – even if it means holding their noses – to bring their audience something they’ll never forget.
