Power, pride, and pure parody: Ryno Nel’s moment meets unexpected comedy

South Africa’s own Ryno Nel — recently crowned World’s Strongest Man — joined HOT 1027 Breakfast for an epic interview packed with grit, gains, and good humour. The 148kg powerhouse, known internationally as “The Rhino,” spoke to Parky, Bunny and Simon about his historic victory in Sacramento, becoming the first African and first Southern Hemisphere athlete to win the title — and doing so in his debut year.

Ryno’s journey from small-scale competitions in Johannesburg to the global stage is as inspiring as it is powerful. He credits his rugby background for giving him the edge in dynamic Strongman events and shared how each competition brings new challenges — whether it’s pulling a bus, lifting Atlas stones or carrying weights the size of people. “You never know what to expect,” he explained. “Each time, the events are different, and that’s what I love.”

Despite his monster lifts and massive appetite — 6,000 calories a day, to be exact — Ryno keeps it humble. He eats what his wife cooks, sticks to clean fuel like ribeye steak and pasta, and believes in a balanced lifestyle over extreme eating habits. “I try to be more of an athlete than just a stepping monster,” he said, laughing.

Listen to the team’s chat with Ryno Nel below:

But just as listeners were digesting the power-packed chat, Bradley “Massive Deadlift” Snyman called in — and things took a turn for the hilarious.

Claiming to be Ryno’s original gym mate from CrossFit Shaven Football in Edenvale, Bradley wasn’t too happy about being left out of the narrative. “We gave him the nickname Rhino — not the Europeans,” he insisted. “And it wasn’t ‘cause of his lifting… if you know what I mean.”

Bradley went on to share his “training” for the Bermuda Triangle Strongman — involving 18 eggs, 9 avos, and 175 people packed into a HiAce. Needless to say, it was chaos.
