One small chapter, one giant leap: Kingsmead Book Fair returns to Joburg

Johannesburg’s literary calendar is about to turn a very exciting page.

On Saturday, 23 May 2026, the much-loved Kingsmead Book Fair returns for its 14th year – and if you’ve ever believed in the magic of a great story, this is one event you don’t want to miss. Hosted at Kingsmead College, the fair promises a full day of ideas, imagination and inspiration, right in the heart of the city.

Brought to life in association with Standard Bank Wealth and Investment, Exclusive Books and media partner HOT 102.7FM, the Kingsmead Book Fair has become a standout celebration of storytelling in all its forms.

This year’s programme is bigger and more diverse than ever, featuring over 150 authors and more than 80 sessions across adult, young adult and children’s categories. From bold conversations about current affairs to deeply personal storytelling, the fair leans into themes shaping how we see the world right now — identity, resilience, innovation, and the power of narrative.

And for HOT 102.7FM listeners, there’s a familiar voice in the mix. Tara Penny will be part of the line-up, bringing her signature storytelling style to a session that’s sure to resonate with audiences who know her from the airwaves.

Five sessions everyone will be talking about:

▪️Stories that shaped us
A powerful panel unpacking how South African authors are using personal history to explore identity and belonging.

▪️True crime: inside the headlines
Featuring Tara Penny alongside leading investigative voices, this session goes behind the scenes of the stories that gripped the nation — and the realities behind them.

▪️Future worlds & fearless imagination
A dynamic discussion with genre writers pushing the boundaries of sci-fi and speculative fiction.

▪️Raising readers in a digital age
A must-attend for parents, with children’s authors and educators sharing how to inspire a lifelong love of books.

▪️Money, power and modern life
A thought-provoking session unpacking the intersection of wealth, influence and decision-making in today’s world.

At its core, the fair is about discovery — those moments where a book introduces you to a new idea, a different perspective, or a world you didn’t know existed. As Director Alex Bouche explains, the goal is to create a platform where “imagination is awakened and curiosity sparked.”

And it’s not just about the books on the shelves — it’s about the conversations, the encounters, and the shared experience of being part of something bigger. From intimate author talks to lively panel discussions, every session offers a chance to connect more deeply with the stories that shape us.

Better still, every ticket sold goes towards the Kingsmead Trust, helping to provide bursaries for young women to access quality education. So while you’re feeding your mind, you’re also making a meaningful difference.

If you’ve been looking for a sign to dive back into reading, discover a new author, or simply spend a day surrounded by creativity — this is it.

The next chapter is waiting.
