It sounds like the ultimate open-road anthem – a song built for road trips, adventure, and singing at full volume with the windows down.

But behind Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is a Highway” is a far heavier story than many fans realise.

Released in 1991, the track became the defining hit of Cochrane’s solo career and went on to become one of those rare songs that never really disappeared. Decades later, it still finds new audiences – from classic radio playlists to a new generation discovering it through the Rascal Flatts version featured in Cars.

But Cochrane has explained that the song wasn’t originally written as a celebration. It was a message he desperately needed to hear himself.

Listen to the Backstory from HOT 1027’s Classic Countdown below:

A man with light hair in dark clothing stands outdoors, leaning on a worn guitar case labeled FRAGILE. The text reads Classic Countdown Backstory in the top left corner, hinting at Robert Palmer’s musical journey, on a blue and white background.

Before writing “Life Is a Highway”, Cochrane had returned from a difficult trip to Africa as part of his humanitarian work. What he witnessed there stayed with him deeply – including extreme suffering, violence, and moments that he admitted left emotional scars.

Back home, he found himself struggling with everything he had seen.

Then, early one morning, he walked into his studio.

A musical idea that had been sitting unfinished suddenly became something much bigger. Cochrane has recalled sitting down around 6am, needing something to lift himself out of a dark place – and within about an hour, “Life Is a Highway” had taken shape.

Remarkably, much of the vocal from that emotional early recording is the same performance heard on the final version of the song.

What began as a personal pep talk became an anthem for millions.

The driving beat and unforgettable chorus may sound like a simple celebration of freedom, but at its heart “Life Is a Highway” is about resilience – moving forward after difficult moments and finding the strength to keep travelling down the road ahead.

It turns out one of music’s greatest feel-good songs was born from one of its writer’s most challenging experiences.
