Own an Airbnb? Your next holiday might already be paid for

If you own an Airbnb property, there’s a good chance you’ve stared at your calendar and seen those frustrating gaps — a few nights here, a long weekend there — sitting empty and earning nothing.

Now imagine if those unused nights could actually fund your next getaway.

It’s a simple but powerful idea — and one that a South African travel tech startup is turning into reality.

Speaking on HOT Business with Jeremy Maggs, powered by Standard Bank, Air Host Swap founder Lamont Hitchings unpacked the thinking behind a platform designed to help Airbnb hosts unlock value from nights that would otherwise go to waste.

👉 Listen to the full interview with Lamont Hitchings below to hear how it works:

A modern white apartment building with large windows and balconies is surrounded by palm trees and greenery, with a clear blue swimming pool in the foreground—perfect for enjoying a hot 1027 breakfast under a bright, sunny sky.

Globally, Airbnb occupancy sits at around 55% — which means nearly half of all available nights go unbooked. In South Africa, that number can be even lower, dipping between 29% and 49%.

That’s not just a quiet calendar — it’s lost opportunity.

“Every second night is not being used,” Hitchings explained. “In a 30-day month, around 15 nights could be sitting empty.”

Traditionally, hosts try to fill those gaps by dropping prices at the last minute. But as many have discovered, that doesn’t always work — especially when bookings don’t come in close to the date.

Instead, Air Host Swap offers a different approach: turning those empty nights into a kind of travel currency.

Hosts can make their unbooked dates available to a global network and, in return, earn points. Those points can then be redeemed for stays at other properties around the world — without needing to directly swap homes or match schedules.

It’s a shift from chasing bookings to unlocking value, giving hosts flexibility while opening up new travel opportunities.

And it’s already gaining traction, with thousands of users and listings on the platform in a relatively short time.

For South Africans — particularly Gauteng-based hosts who travel frequently — the appeal is obvious. Your property doesn’t just generate income when it’s booked… it could also help pay for your next holiday when it’s not.

In a world where travel costs continue to rise, that’s a compelling proposition.

Because sometimes, the best trips don’t start with a booking — they start with an empty calendar.
