Where are the jobs? New data reveals hope for young South Africans

It’s one of South Africa’s most frustrating catch-22s: young people can’t get a job without experience, but they can’t gain experience without a job. And according to PNET’s Job Market Trends Report, the cycle is still very much alive – especially for South Africa’s youth.

Speaking on HOT Business, powered by Standard Bank, Paul Byrne, Head of Insights at PNET, unpacked just how serious the situation is. A staggering 46% of South Africans aged 15 to 34 are currently unemployed, and many of them are qualified. But the problem lies in a lack of opportunity, not ambition.

Only around 10% of all advertised jobs cater to entry-level, graduate or student roles – a sobering stat, especially during Youth Month. But Byrne also pointed to green shoots – highlighting sectors where young South Africans have a better chance of breaking into the job market.

Top of the list? Design, media and the arts, where degrees aren’t always essential and creative skills are in demand. He also mentioned finance, sales, and even architecture and engineering – industries offering a range of junior roles to qualified applicants. Interestingly, sales roles had the highest proportion of entry-level listings – and often rely more on personality than paper qualifications.

So what can be done to help our youth find their footing?

From internships and student jobs to ongoing self-education and upskilling, Byrne shared some clear steps for progress – but says it’s a conversation that needs to happen across society.
