With entries already flowing in and excitement steadily building across Gauteng’s running community, the Pirates 21K Powered by Medshield is gearing up once again to take over the streets of Johannesburg. As one of the city’s oldest and most iconic road races, the Pirates 21 remains a bucket-list challenge for seasoned runners and ambitious first-timers alike — and 2026 is shaping up to be one of its most memorable editions yet.
Starting at the historic Pirates Club in Greenside, this gruelling 21.1 km route winds its way through some of Joburg’s most scenic suburbs before pushing runners up the infamous Northcliff Hill, a stretch that has earned the race its reputation as “Joburg’s toughest half-marathon.”
Speaking to HOT 102.7FM, race director Samantha Harrison described the Pirates 21K Powered by Medshield as “the toughest for a reason,” thanks to the infamous climb towards the Northcliff water tower — a stretch many runners recognise as the defining test of the race. But she says that’s exactly what makes it special. The early kilometres are more forgiving and scenic, winding through Joburg’s leafy suburbs before the real climbing begins around the 10–14km mark. Once runners crest the top, they’re rewarded with a fast, exhilarating descent back towards the Pirates Club.
Harrison also highlighted the race’s role in preparing elite athletes for major events like Comrades and Two Oceans, with top runners often using the route for its exceptional hill training. She also emphasised that the event truly caters for everyone — from ambitious first-timers to seasoned athletes — with lively water points every 3km and a strong community spirit throughout. This year, HOT 102.7FM returns as an official media sponsor, shining a spotlight on the stories, personalities and preparations behind the event.
