Record smashed and Crocs conquer Northcliff at the Pirates 21K

Thousands of runners are celebrating this morning after conquering what’s widely known as Joburg’s toughest half marathon — the Pirates 21K powered by Medshield Medical Scheme.

It was a brutal test of endurance on the infamous Northcliff climb, where many admitted “it’s all about the mind game” once you hit the hill. And yet, they keep coming back — because as one runner put it, “we want to do hard things.”

This year’s race will go down in the history books. In the men’s race, 37-year-old Jobo Khatoane stormed home in a blistering 1:06:57, shattering the previous course record just after 8am. The performance serves as a powerful statement ahead of his Two Oceans campaign, proving his body is in peak condition.

In the women’s race, 34-year-old Neheng Khatala claimed victory in extraordinary fashion — winning on her very first attempt at the notoriously punishing course. She credited consistent, smart training for the breakthrough result.

Preparation is everything on this route. Veterans advise runners to train properly — even drive the course beforehand — and to have a solid race plan. But not everyone arrived fully prepared. One determined participant forgot his running shoes and completed the entire race in his wife’s pink Crocs.

From record-breaking performances to borrowed footwear and well-earned ice-cold drinks at the finish, this year’s Pirates 21K more than lived up to the hype — once again proving why it remains a true Joburg classic.
