There was glitter on the dance floor, satin on the shirts, and not a hair out of place — it was 1978, the year disco ruled the airwaves, superheroes hit the big screen, and a whole new kind of television drama arrived in our living rooms.
It’s the featured year on this week’s HOT Classic Countdown with Steve Bishop, taking place every Sunday from 12 to 3pm on HOT 102.7FM.
As John Travolta strutted across cinema screens in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, Rod Stewart was sashaying his way up the charts with Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? — a tongue-in-cheek take on the disco craze that ended up becoming one of his biggest hits. Stewart later admitted it was meant as a joke, but fans across the world took it seriously enough to make it a number-one smash.
On the softer side of the dance floor, Kiss You All Over by Exile was turning up the temperature with sultry harmonies and a slow-burning groove that stayed at the top of the American charts for weeks. It was one of those songs that captured the sensual sound of the late ’70s — halfway between rock, pop, and pure romance.
Meanwhile, a new wave of entertainment was changing the way we watched stories unfold. Television audiences were gripped by the arrival of Dallas, introducing us to the cunning J.R. Ewing and a level of family drama we’d never seen before. On the big screen, Superman: The Movie proved that a man really could fly — and made Christopher Reeve a household name overnight.
1978 was also a year of big musical firsts. Kate Bush became the first woman in the UK to top the charts with a self-written song (Wuthering Heights), and the Bee Gees were unstoppable with Night Fever — the song that defined the disco era and still fills dance floors nearly five decades later.
Did You Know?
When Rod Stewart’s Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? hit number one, he donated all the royalties to UNICEF — making it the funkiest charity single ever recorded.
From disco infernos to Dallas dynasties, 1978 was a year that shimmered with sequins, soundtracks, and superhero capes — and we’re counting it down in style this Sunday on HOT 102.7FM.
