The sweet and silly secret behind Bananarama’s band name
Back in the early 1980s, three fun-loving friends in London found themselves caught up in a whirlwind of music, fashion, and possibility. Little did they know their quirky choice of name — “Bananarama” — would follow them for decades, even as they went on to become one of the most successful girl groups of the era.
As the story goes, the trio originally formed in 1981 and were, by their own admission, signed more as a novelty act than a serious pop proposition. Their very first single didn’t exactly help their case either: sung entirely in Swahili, it wasn’t the obvious radio smash to launch a pop career. But there was something about their style, their fun, and yes, that unforgettable name, that meant people couldn’t ignore them for long.
So where did “Bananarama” come from? According to the group, it was a mix of teenage whimsy and pure pop inspiration. They were massive fans of Roxy Music, who had a song called “Pyjamarama.” The word itself stuck with them. It was catchy, unusual, and slightly surreal. “Bananas” were then added into the mix — tropical, silly, and playful. Put together, it became “Bananarama.” Easy to remember, impossible to forget.

Bananarama: A Playful Name with Serious ’80s Pop Success
Of course, at the time, none of the band members thought they’d have much of a career to speak of. As one of them admitted later, “If we’d known we’d last, we might have chosen something a little different!” But the charm of the name lies in its randomness — and it matched perfectly with the group’s carefree energy.
The irony is that behind the tongue-in-cheek name was a group that would go on to achieve serious chart success. With hits like Cruel Summer, Robert De Niro’s Waiting and their iconic cover of Venus, Bananarama became a fixture of ’80s pop, proving you don’t need a “serious” name to be taken seriously in the end.
Did you know? Bananarama holds the Guinness World Record for the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world. Not bad for a band whose name started as a teenage giggle!
