The world is saying goodbye to a true architect of modern pop. Neil Sedaka, the Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter whose music shaped the soundtrack of the 1960s and beyond, has died at the age of 86.

Sedaka’s story began long before the hit records. Born in 1939, his prodigious talent emerged early; by just nine years old he was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School, where many assumed he was destined for a classical career. But everything changed when a teenage Sedaka began writing lyrics alongside his neighbour Howard Greenfield — forging a partnership that would define American pop’s golden era.

Their first major breakthrough came when Sedaka was just 19 with “Stupid Cupid,” a song that shot across the airwaves and signalled the arrival of a formidable young hitmaker.

Soon after came Calendar Girl, and then one of the most enduring heartbreak anthems of all time: Breaking Up Is Hard to Do — the track that, in 1962, soared to number one and became synonymous with Sedaka’s bright, melodic style.

But his rise wasn’t without interruption. When The Beatles and The Rolling Stones transformed America’s musical landscape, Sedaka’s chart presence faded. It wasn’t until Elton John signed him to Rocket Records in 1973 that his career roared back to life.

From that resurgence came a new wave of classics — including Laughter in the Rain, Bad Blood, and Love Will Keep Us Together, which became a global smash.

In an interview with SiriusXM, Sedaka once confessed:

“That blank piece of paper scares me to death when I’m sitting down to write. So I will be inspired by a chord, by a beat, by a vocalist’s sound.”

It was that devotion to craft that guided a career spanning more than 60 years.

Over time, Sedaka collected five Grammy nominations and, in 1983, earned his place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame— a fitting tribute to a man whose melodies shaped generations.

Neil Sedaka leaves behind not only a catalogue of timeless hits, but a legacy of joy, romance, optimism, and unmistakable musical charm.

A voice that marked young love, heartbreak, first dances, and road-trip singalongs — and one that continues to echo across Old Skool playlists, nostalgia stations, and family memories.
