HOT 102.7FM celebrates one of South Africa’s most distinctive broadcast voices.
HOT 102.7FM is proud to celebrate the induction of Rob Vega into the South African Radio Hall of Fame at the recent Telkom Radio Awards. It’s a fitting tribute to a broadcaster whose unmistakable voice, versatility, and longevity have made him a staple of South African radio for more than 30 years.
Rob’s journey began in 1990, when a young Roald Woods – fresh from army duty and studying through UNISA – heard David Blood announce that the station was “looking for new blood.” A cassette demo and one audition later, Roald Woods became Rob Vega, and soon found himself anchoring the Sunday midnight to Monday 6am slot.
From there, his career took him across the country: first to Durban in 1991 to join Capital Radio 604; then to Cape Town in 1993, where he took over Good Hope FM’s weekday Drive Show. In 1998, Rob stepped into full-time voice work and moved to Johannesburg. Radio wasn’t done with him though, and stints followed at 5FM, Thames 107.8 in London, 94.7, and 702, each adding depth and range to his already impressive broadcast repertoire.
In 2019, HOT 91.9FM’s Programme Manager, Tony Murrell, invited Rob to help out “for a bit” on Saturday mornings. That “bit” turned into five years, a fiercely loyal audience, and a Best Weekend Radio Show win at the 2021 SA Radio Awards.
By April 2024, Rob officially joined the weekday lineup on HOT 102.7FM, hosting the 9am–12pm slot with his trademark warmth, humour, and professionalism. He also continues to anchor Saturdays from 6am–9am.
Lloyd Madurai, HOT 102.7FM’s Managing Director, says:
“I am happy Rob Vega has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Rob is a consummate professional on air as well as a talented voice-over artist. He has been with Hot 102.7FM since its inception. We celebrate this remarkable achievement with him.”
As Rob joins the South African Radio Hall of Fame, his story stands as a reminder that great radio careers aren’t linear. From midnight shifts to major metros, from Durban beaches to London studios, Rob’s journey has been anything but predictable.
And now, officially, unforgettable.
