Steve “The Bish” Bishop inducted into the South African Radio Hall of Fame

HOT 102.7FM honours a four-decade journey that helped shape the sound of South African broadcasting.

HOT 102.7FM is proud to celebrate the induction of Steve “Bish” Bishop into the South African Radio Hall of Fame at the 2025 Telkom Radio Awards. It’s an honour befitting a man whose voice, influence, and unmistakable presence have resonated across South African airwaves for nearly 40 years.

Bish’s broadcasting journey began in 1986 at the iconic Capital Radio 604, then based at Johannesburg’s Milpark Galleries. When the station relocated to Durban in 1990, he went with it, rising through the on-air ranks to become one of Capital’s flagship voices, hosting both Afternoon Drive and Breakfast before the station’s closure in 1996. That era would become foundational not just for Bish, but for South African radio itself. A natural mentor, he helped shape the careers of future industry heavyweights including Zak Mkhize, Justice Ramashola, and Darren “Wackhead” Simpson.

After a successful run on the Radio Algoa breakfast show from 1997 to 2000 he made his way back to Johannesburg and, from 2002 onward, found a home on SuperSport, where he quickly became one of the network’s most recognisable and trusted voices.

Despite his success in television and voice work, radio remained in his blood. In 2014 Bish returned to the airwaves on HOT 91.9FM’s Afternoon Drive before moving to Mix 93.8FM in 2016.

In recent years, Bish has found a home on HOT 102.7FM, spending three years on mid-mornings before moving to his current weekend lineup where he hosts the hugely popular Classic Countdown. His encyclopaedic music knowledge, trademark delivery, and warm, witty presence have made him a listener favourite.

Lloyd Madurai, Managing Director of HOT 102.7FM, says the induction is well deserved:

“Steve Bishop has one of the most iconic voices in radio. He has been in the industry for many years. He is a talented on-air presenter as well as a professional voice-over artist and DJ.”

As Steve “the Bish” Bishop enters the South African Radio Hall of Fame, the industry salutes a career built on versatility, passion, innovation, and an unshakeable love for the medium. His influence spans stations, generations, and platforms.

And now, with this honour, his place in radio history is assured.
