There was plenty of laughter on HOT 1027 Breakfast this morning after Parky returned from his first-ever golf club championships with a story that his colleagues simply couldn’t resist teasing him about.

The Bryanston Country Club event proved to be a tough introduction to competitive club golf for the breakfast show host — and when former Proteas cricketer Boeta Dippenaar joined the conversation on the show, the banter quickly gathered pace.

While Parky had hoped to share the story in his own words, co-host Simon Hill wasted no time revealing the headline detail: Parky had finished at the bottom of the leaderboard.

But as the team unpacked the weekend’s events on air, it became clear that the scorecard didn’t quite tell the full story.

Parky explained that his weekend got off to a tricky start when he made a small — but important — decision about which tee to play from. In golf, tee boxes determine the length and difficulty of the hole, and players are usually assigned one based on their handicap.

“I was supposed to play off the blues,” Parky admitted. “But my friends were playing off the whites, so I decided to play off the whites with them.”

It was the first of several challenges over the two-day event.

Parky eventually recorded scores of 106 on day one and 104 on day two, giving him a combined total of 210 shots. While that placed him last in the standings, he joked that the result may have been affected by a small scoring mishap along the way.

At one point, a “pickup” — where a player stops playing a hole after reaching the maximum strokes allowed — was apparently recorded against his name. Parky insists he actually finished the hole, but the entry on the scoring app may have pushed him further down the leaderboard.

The result quickly became the subject of good-natured ribbing both on the show and among Parky’s own friends.

As Hill joked during the segment, anyone curious about the final standings can simply look up the Bryanston Country Club Club Championships results online.
