A handwritten note, a blue balloon, and the kindness of a stranger have sparked a wave of compassion across Johannesburg.
Broadacres social worker Bianca Will is hoping to reach the person behind an emotional message that unexpectedly landed in her driveway this week.
Bianca says she found a blue balloon outside her home with a handwritten note attached — and after reading the message, she immediately became concerned about the person who had sent it.
“I read the note and I was really concerned about this person,” she told HOT 1027 News. “They’re in a really dark place and it just left me feeling so uneasy and so worried.”
Not knowing where the balloon had come from, or how far it had travelled before reaching her home, Bianca decided she couldn’t simply let it go.
Instead, she turned to social media, hoping that the power of community could help her find the stranger behind the words.
“I gave it some thought and I thought, ‘No, I’m going to reach out to see if I can possibly help,’” she explained. Her post has since been shared widely, with Joburg residents joining the search and leaving messages of care and encouragement for someone they have never met.
UPDATE: The blue balloon has already made a difference
Since HOT1027 first shared this story, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) says there has been a significant increase in Joburg residents reaching out for support.
After hearing about the search for the person behind the blue balloon, more people have started their own conversations and reached out to trained counsellors.
SADAG Call Centre Operations Director Cassey Chambers says the response is a powerful reminder that many people are fighting silent battles — and sometimes, one person’s story can give someone else the courage to ask for help.
While the search for the person behind the handwritten note continues, their message has already had an impact across the city.
“I’m here if you need to chat,” she said. “Even if it’s not me, there are so many helplines that are anonymous that could assist you in this time of need.”
The search for the person behind the balloon has become a powerful reminder that even in difficult moments, kindness can arrive in unexpected ways.
