From Magpie to Red: Simon Hill seals his Liverpool transfer on the streets of Fourways
What started as playful on-air chaos on the HOT 1027 Breakfast Show has now become official — and very public.
After weeks of debate, negotiations and suggested “transfer fees”, Simon Hill has formally completed his move from Newcastle United F.C. to Liverpool F.C. — and he did it in true Joburg style… on the main roads of Fourways.
In a city like Johannesburg—where supporter groups are loud, loyal, and love a good chirp—this kind of switch is treasonous. And Parky and Bunny were quick to remind him of exactly that.
According to Parky, Simon was never on loan: “That wasn’t the deal!” The season-long wager was simple—whoever’s team finished lower on the log would face a punishment, ranging from swimming in mid-winter to whatever diabolical idea the winner could dream up. But after two trips to Liverpool F.C.’s sacred home ground, rubbing shoulders with legends like Gary McAllister, Bruce Grobbelaar, and Nigel Spackman, and screaming “Mo Salah running down the wing!” at the top of his lungs, Simon returned a changed man.
A red man.
Through. And. Through.
Listeners immediately piled in with their own ideas for Simon’s “transfer fee”. Adrian suggested the ultimate loyalty test: a Liverpool tattoo, ensuring he can never club-hop again. Jackie dialled in with a different angle: if Simon switches now, then the end-of-season punishment should be doubled.
Meanwhile, Parky—ever the agent provocateur—briefly floated the idea of joining Arsenal himself… before clarifying he’d “rather pick up a dog’s poo bare-handed and clap.”
As the messages poured in, one thing became clear:
Simon’s transfer isn’t just a football decision. It’s a Joburg-level scandal.
Following his on-air confession that his heart had been captured at Anfield, Newcastle listener Chris Skinner made a simple request: if Simon was leaving the Magpies, he wanted the shirt.
And so, on the main roads of Fourways, the handover happened.
Simon passed his Newcastle jersey to Chris — officially ending what may be one of the shortest supporter stints in Premier League history. On the other side, the Liverpool Supporters Club of Gauteng, led by Benita Smith, welcomed him with a brand-new Liverpool shirt and a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
There were smiles, laughter — and perhaps a slightly emotional Hill.
The loan jokes are over. The shirt has changed. The anthem has been sung.
Now the Breakfast team is left with one question:
Was this a simple evolution… or the most dramatic transfer saga ever to hit Joburg?
