The best exercises to try when you're feeling tired

Feeling tired is usually a sign that you need to slow down. While it may be tempting to skip a workout altogether, you could try low-impact exercises such as yoga or going for a walk instead.

James Barr, personal trainer at Fitness First, has shared his tips for exercising when you are low on energy.

Walking

Walking is an effective exercise that requires little planning, no equipment and can be done at any pace.

“Walking can be very therapeutic and is a natural movement for the body. It’s a simple yet effective low-impact exercise that can be done anywhere, at any pace and for any duration,” the expert says. “It also helps to improve cardiovascular health, enhance your mood, and maintain a healthy weight.”

Yoga

Yoga is a great way to improve your strength and flexibility without overexerting your body.

“Yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to promote physical and mental wellness,” James explains. “It can help increase flexibility, strength, and balance while also promoting relaxation and stress reduction.”

There are many different styles of yoga, so opt for a gentle or restorative practice if you’re feeling tired.

Pilates

Like yoga, Pilates is a great, low-impact way to improve your overall fitness.

“Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, and overall muscle toning without adding bulk. It emphasises proper postural alignment, core strength, and muscle balance,” he states. “Pilates is usually a controlled and precise form of exercise with a focus on breath, which can also help with relaxation.”

Stretching

If you don’t have the energy for a full workout, why not opt for stretching instead? The practice promotes relaxation and can help ease the tension in your muscles.

“Stretching is essential to keep your muscles flexible, strong, and healthy,” the personal trainer says. “Gentle stretching routine can help maintain the range of motion in your joints and prevent stiffness.”

Swimming

Another effective form of exercise that puts minimal stress on your body is swimming.

“Swimming is a gentle way to build cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength without stressing your joints,” James shares. “The water provides resistance for your muscles while also supporting your body. Swimming can also be very calming and a refreshing workout to take on (especially if you’re tired).”
