St Patrick's Day: "What's the craic?"
This Monday, March 17, the world turns green for St. Patrick’s Day – a time to celebrate Irish heritage, music, and of course, good times! But how much do you really know about this iconic day?
St. Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland as a feast day for the country’s patron saint, St. Patrick, who is credited with bringing Christianity to the Emerald Isle. Over the years, it has transformed into a global celebration of Irish culture, marked by parades, music, and plenty of festive cheer.
To get the inside scoop on how to truly embrace St. Patrick’s Day, Helen Green, Chair of the Irish South African Association, shared some key insights with HOT 1027 News. And it all starts with one of the most misunderstood Irish phrases:
“What’s the craic?”
Now, before you go searching for cracks in the pavement, Helen explains that ‘craic’ (pronounced ‘crack’) is an Irish word meaning fun, good times, and lively conversation. It’s the perfect blend of laughter, storytelling, and warmth that makes Irish gatherings unforgettable. So, when someone asks, “What’s the craic?”, they’re simply checking in on the fun!
And if you plan on raising a glass this St. Paddy’s Day (yes, it’s Paddy’s with a D, not Patty’s), there’s an authentically Irish way to say cheers: Sláinte!
“Sláinte” (pronounced slawn-cha) means health in Irish and is a staple of every good Irish toast. Speaking of toasts, here’s a classic one to keep in your back pocket:
“Here’s to cheating, fighting, stealing, and drinking. If you cheat, may you cheat death. If you fight, may you fight for a loved one. If you steal, may you steal a lover’s heart. And if you drink, may you drink with me.”

How to Celebrate St Patrick’s Like the Irish
While Hollywood might have given us phrases like “Top o’ the morning to ya”, Helen is quick to point out that real Irish folk don’t say that – it’s more of an American invention.
If you’re looking to celebrate the true spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish South African Association is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day celebration on Saturday evening at Bryanston Sports Club. Expect live Irish music, traditional dancing, plenty of craic, and of course, a few heartfelt Sláintes!
