Sometimes the magic in music comes from the moments that almost never made it.
For Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, one of those moments happened while creating Walking on Broken Glass — and it nearly ended up on the cutting room floor.
Speaking about the song, Dave Stewart revealed that Annie introduced a melodic part that immediately caught his attention, but not in the way listeners might expect.
To him, it sounded wrong.
The notes clashed, creating a tension that went against everything he thought should work musically. Stewart recalled telling Annie that it simply couldn’t stay because the harmony felt off.
But Annie Lennox trusted her instinct.
Instead of backing down, she kept insisting that she liked it. Back and forth the pair went, with Stewart arguing that the notes were fighting each other, while Annie remained convinced that the unusual sound gave the song something special.
Eventually, Stewart relented.
He agreed to leave the part in.
And, as he later admitted, that supposedly “wrong” musical choice became one of the defining hooks of the song.

It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes moment that says so much about the creative chemistry between Annie and Dave. The genius of Eurythmics was never about playing it safe — it was about embracing tension, drama and emotion, even when the rules said otherwise.
In the end, the very note that seemed out of place became part of what made Walking on Broken Glass so memorable.
Did you know?
Some of the most iconic moments in pop history come from so-called “mistakes”. In this case, Annie Lennox’s refusal to let go of a note Dave Stewart thought clashed helped create a hook that listeners still instantly recognise decades later.
Sometimes, the magic lies in breaking the rules.
