Simon Hill takes on Billy Joel’s lyrical marathon… and somehow Hits The Spot
The rules of Hit The Spot on HOT 1027 Breakfast are simple: keep singing when the music disappears… and hope you’re still in the right place when it comes back.
The execution? Not quite as simple.
After Bunny – famous for singing along to just about every song that plays in the studio – was first challenged to prove her timing, Parky also stepped up to the mic. But while both gave it their best shot, the return of the music proved just how tricky it is to stay perfectly on beat without any help.
Then came Simon Hill. And he didn’t exactly pick an easy one!
Simon took on Billy Joel’s 1989 hit We Didn’t Start the Fire – a song that has challenged music fans for decades thanks to its relentless pace and almost breathless list of names, places and world events.
The song features more than 100 historical references, covering headlines and cultural moments from 1949 – the year Billy Joel was born – through to 1989 when the track was released.
From Harry Truman and Marilyn Monroe to the Cold War, Beatlemania, Watergate and beyond, Joel turned 40 years of world history into one of the most recognisable lyrical workouts in music.
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and has remained a pop culture favourite, partly because so many fans have tried (and failed) to memorise every single line.
But nailing Hit The Spot apparently wasn’t enough for Simon.
Because once he proved he could keep up with Billy Joel… he decided to try it again with a South African twist.
This time, channelling legendary rugby commentator Hugh Bladen.
